Childcare

Current support
For the care of children in Chemnitz there are
- 89 municipal day-care centres - including eleven branches,
- 86 independently run daycare centres - including ten outposts and
- 66 childminders, including one childminder at the AWO
are available.
Parents are free to choose whether they want their child to be looked after in a daycare centre run by the City of Chemnitz, an independent provider or by a childminder until the child reaches the age of three.
Several facilities can be specified for one enrolment. (Multiple entries possible, max. five facilities)
Every child has a legal right to a childcare place. For various reasons, however, it is not always possible to take into account a specific desired facility. The criteria with the highest priority are the date of registration, the transition from the Rembrandtstraße daycare centre/crèche to the subsequent facility and siblings.
Parents receive a binding statement on the prospects of the childcare place they have applied for four weeks after submitting their application.
The previous time limit for confirmation (six months before the desired date) by the centre managers will be removed in order to ensure that parents receive confirmation of a daycare place at an early stage.
Daycare centre service point

The staff at the Kita-Platz service centre of the Youth Welfare Office of the City of Chemnitz are available to provide parents with individual advice on childcare.
It is necessary to make an appointment by telephone.

Legislation
The federal legal basis for child daycare under public responsibility is the Eighth Social Code (SGB VIII).
The Saxon law is based on the Saxon Daycare Centre Act (SächsKitaG).
Parental contributions
Parental contributions are charged for the use of a place in a day care centre. These are determined on the basis of the valid statutes of the City of Chemnitz for the collection of parental contributions. The fees apply uniformly to all municipal and independent daycare centres as well as to childminders. The staggered parental contributions for the first and second child as well as other children is a sign of family-friendly policies in Chemnitz.
Payment of parental contributions

Parental contributions can be partially or fully reimbursed. The basis for the calculation is the respective income situation of the family. The Department of Finance, Administration, Child and Youth Support at the Youth Welfare Office is responsible for advising on applications and processing them.

Transition from daycare centre to school
The transition from daycare centre to primary school is a big step. Entering this new phase of life is not only awaited with curiosity and excitement by future school starters. It is also exciting for parents to see how their children will cope with the transition.
To provide comprehensive information, the Youth Welfare Office publishes the annual brochure "My child is starting school". Parents can obtain the guide from their child's day care centre.
Parents whose children do not attend a day care centre can obtain the brochure from the Youth Welfare Office.

Child day care

The education, upbringing and care of the child by a childminder is equivalent to care in a day care centre. Childminders look after up to five children in their own home or in rented accommodation.
The Kita-Portal provides an overview of whether there is a childminder near your home. Registration for the waiting list can be done online in the Kita-Portal in the same way as for a place in a daycare centre.
People who would like to take on this job can obtain information from the youth welfare office about the necessary documents, funding opportunities and the requirements for working as a childminder.
