Architecture Prize of the City of Chemnitz 2018

Award winners have been announced
The winners of the first Architecture Prize organised by the City of Chemnitz have been announced. After two days of deliberation, the jury selected three equally deserving prize winners from the 23 entries. Two commendations were also awarded.
Building Mayor Michael Stötzer congratulated the award winners: "It is pleasing that we received very different entries: Listed buildings and new buildings. Projects for housing, education or transport."
The jury emphasised the high architectural quality and diversity of the projects. Prof Hilde León, chair of the jury: "We are absolutely convinced by the three award winners. They are inspiring for both public and private clients. We are delighted that such beautiful projects have been created in Chemnitz."
The award winners:
New construction of Intenta GmbH Chemnitz headquarters

Architect: architekturkanal Falko Hensel, Chemnitz

From the jury's judgement:
- inspiring, the building gives the company an identity
- pleasant working atmosphere thanks to open-plan workplaces and outdoor and communal spaces
- skilful integration into the slope edge of the Kaßberg with simultaneous opening to the green space of the Kappelbach stream
- convincing architecture in terms of proportions and materials
Remodelling Chemnitz main station

Architect: Grüntuch Ernst Architects, Berlin
Client: Verkehrsverbund Mittelsachsen

- open building creates atmosphere and relationship to the city
- different day and night effects
- historic building nevertheless retains its significance
Conversion of GDR type building in Chemnitz Kappel

Architect: Schettler Architects Weimar

From the jury's judgement:
- creates a good quality of stay in and in front of the building
- beautiful flats of all sizes created
- sets impulses for similar/future projects

Background:
The City of Chemnitz awards the prize for outstanding achievements in architecture, open space and urban planning that have a lasting impact on the cityscape. In order to be able to honour the relevant projects, it awards the City of Chemnitz Architecture Prize every three years. The award is aimed at developers and architects.
Buildings completed in the city of Chemnitz in the period 2013-2018 were eligible. Private and public clients and architects/designers were eligible to participate.
The city's architecture prize is a non-material prize. In a festive award ceremony in November, the winners will be presented with a plaque and certificate, which are intended to permanently honour the prize.
In addition, all award-winning and other works will be on display in the foyer of the municipal swimming pool for the next two weeks.
