The Museum of Natural History sees itself as a meeting place in the area of conflict between the demand for a better quality of life and the preservation of the natural environment. The museum's international reputation is based above all on its unique collection of silicified wood from the 290-million-year-old volcanic Rotliegend deposits of Chemnitz (Sterzeleanum), the Petrified Forest, and the associated palaeobotanical specialist library.
