Cultural promotion 2020
Almost €3 million for the promotion of independent culture in Chemnitz
For the current year 2020, around € 2.9 million will be available for the promotion of independent culture in Chemnitz. This was decided by the Culture Committee at its meeting on 16 January 2020 with draft resolution no. B-004/2020. Prior to this, the newly constituted Cultural Advisory Board of the City of Chemnitz had dealt extensively with the applications submitted by cultural institutions in two meetings. A total of 113 applications for funding were submitted to the cultural organisation. This meant that the available budget for cultural funding was oversubscribed by around € 1.4 million. This was a challenge not only for the cultural administration and the committees, but especially for the cultural organisations. As a result, not all of the measures submitted could be (sufficiently) supported. Especially after the adoption of the cultural strategy in 2019 and in view of the Capital of Culture application, many cultural institutions were motivated to creatively align and design the planned programmes of their institutions or projects with the objectives. For these reasons, the Cultural Advisory Board recommended to the Cultural Committee that further necessary funds be sought in the City of Chemnitz budget for this year and made available for cultural funding.
With the approximately € 2.9 million currently available, the Culture Committee was able to approve a total of 96 grants for institutional and project-related cultural funding for 2020. The funds for public projects by institutions, associations and projects will go towards museum work, performing arts, music, visual and applied arts, film/media, literature, socio-culture, local history and youth culture.
It is particularly pleasing that a total of 59 projects can be subsidised in addition to the institutionally funded facilities.
The promotion and support of independent cultural organisations is of great importance, as Chemnitz's cultural landscape derives its characteristic vibrancy not least from the diversity and stimulating activities of associations, initiatives and individual artists.
