Online survey on Chemnitz city centre 2021

Key findings of the survey published

The City of Chemnitz invited citizens to take part in an online survey on the city centre between 29 April 2021 and 23 May 2021. The response was above average with 3,020 participants.

The city centre is the central place where all groups, milieus and classes of the city's population meet and interact. It is often referred to as the heart, calling card or parlour of a city. In addition to the functions of living, working and providing for oneself, the city centre is becoming increasingly important as a place of communication and culture.

For many years, retail was one of the most important leading uses in the city centre. However, the situation of city centre retail is undergoing radical change in many cities, including Chemnitz. In addition to the usual competition in the form of neighbouring medium-sized and regional centres and shopping centres in sometimes non-integrated locations, the growing e-commerce trade and, since 2020, the pandemic have been additional drivers of structural change in recent years.

The insights gained also serve as a basis for planning the further development of the city centre as an urban centre of activity with an attractive mix of uses and high visitor frequency.
