Museum of Natural History Chemnitz

Behind the door of the former Tietz department stores' lies a world of wonder. Where ties and fine stockings used to be sold, you can now embark on a journey through the history of the earth.

On the first floor of today's cultural and educational centre is the Museum of Natural History, which has an impressive collection of plants and animals that have turned to stone.

Chemnitz Industrial Museum

The Chemnitz Industrial Museum is located at one of the central sites of Saxony's and Chemnitz's industrial history. In the factory hall built by Hermann and Alfred Escher in 1907, the Chemnitz Industrial Museum presents a permanent exhibition on Saxony's industrial history on 3,500 square metres - experience industry in transition.

The Neue Sächsische Galerie is the museum for contemporary art in Chemnitz. Its presentations focus on the development of art in the state of Saxony since 1945, and the six to eight exhibitions it organises each year also showcase works from beyond the region.

Sure, there are old clay pots in the smac too. But the museum is not dusty. Guests love to digitally transform themselves into Neanderthals. Can you determine the age of a piece of wood based on the growth rings? Or sort ceramic vessels archaeologist-style using the swipe function? Uncovering a forgery is also exciting: in the monastery library, you can follow the crude carvers that Cistercian nuns made in the late Middle Ages when they forged a document.

See, marvel, play! - this motto is the programme. The German PLAY Museum is a lively place that promotes active communication between generations and cultures. The well-stocked games room offers the longest stay for enthusiasts and casual gamers. "Night at the Museum" can also be played here once a month. The popular family event "Chemnitz spielt" (Chemnitz plays) revitalises World Games Day every May.

Museum for Saxon Vehicles Chemnitz

Big names such as DKW, Wanderer, MZ or Diamant, but also smaller brands such as Moll or ESWECO - they all have their place in the museum's exhibition. The more than 150 cars, motorbikes and bicycles are representative of the fact that Saxony was not only characterised by vehicle construction, but also played a key role in shaping it.

Chemnitz-Hilbersdorf railway station

Schauplatz Eisenbahn is the largest and one of the most important railway museums in Germany. Living railway history can be experienced at the authentic location, in the historic building ensemble of the marshalling yard and the railway depot in Chemnitz-Hilbersdorf. The impressive fleet of vehicles includes steam, diesel and electric locomotives from various series, historic passenger and goods wagons as well as unique and remarkable technical installations, such as the world's only cable unwinding system.

Ebersdorf School Museum

Founded in October 1991, the Ebersdorf School Museum e. V. has set itself the goal of preserving schools and school history from the 19th century to the present day and making them accessible to the general public. In historical lessons, children, young people and adults of all ages can find out how people taught and learnt in the days of the emperor or when their grandparents went to school.

Chemnitz Tram Museum

If you follow the industrial route along Zwickauer Straße, you will find an old track system in the property at number 164, which is reminiscent of the era of the Chemnitz narrow-gauge tramway. The Chemnitz Tram Museum houses relics from a bygone era in a carriage shed dating back to 1908.

Rabenstein rock dome visitor mine

On the generously laid out, near-natural site with lovingly restored buildings, there is an interplay of nature, history and mining history to observe. The visitor trail is around 700 metres long and takes around 40 minutes to complete. Dive underground - this is also possible in the visitor mine! The third and fourth levels of the Rabenstein rock dome can be dived into.
