Intervention areas - urban development project of the European Capital of Culture 2025

The city will change in the coming years, as the European Capital of Culture 2025 is also an urban development project. Places will undergo a transformation in very different ways on a total of 30 so-called intervention areas: From the traditional Hartmann Factory (the visitor centre of the European Capital of Culture in the festival year and headquarters of Kulturhauptstadt Europas Chemnitz 2025 gGmbH), to a new district park on a small, renaturalised river (the Pleißenbach) on a former railway site, to a fairground in a rural district where Christmas markets and village festivals will be held in future.

Urban development concept

The city administration has drawn up a long-term urban development concept (SEKo). The SEKo sets clear priorities for the city's development up to 2020 and covers important areas such as population development, social and cultural issues, housing and urban development. >> more

Development of the city centre

The city of Chemnitz has commissioned planning teams to develop ideas for the further urban development of the city centre as part of an appraisal process. The plans are now being implemented step by step. And a lot will also be happening in other parts of the city centre in the coming years. >> more

Neighbourhood planning and projects

At Brühl, on Sonnenberg, at Altendorf railway station or in Altchemnitz - various urban development projects are currently being implemented. What they all have in common is the aim of upgrading the districts and developing them into liveable neighbourhoods with a future. >> more

Urban development funding

For more than 30 years, urban development funding from the federal and state governments, combined with many investments by the city and private commitment, has made an indispensable contribution to urban development in Chemnitz. It is therefore one of the most important instruments of urban development and helps to ensure the objectives of a socially, economically and ecologically balanced urban development and urban regeneration policy.>> more
