Day of urban development

For more than 30 years, urban development funding from the federal and state governments, combined with many investments by the city of Chemnitz and private commitment, has made an indispensable contribution to urban development. To date, over 400 million euros in grants from various programmes have been invested in urban development areas of the Gründerzeit, the city centre, districts in the Heckert area, the revitalisation of brownfield sites and the upgrading of technical infrastructure. Neighbourhood management teams are active on site with citizens on behalf of the urban planning office, redevelopment agencies and agencies advise building owners or new investors, encourage cooperative housing projects and support small businesses in the neighbourhood.
The Day of Urban Development Promotion has been celebrated nationwide since 2015 in order to strengthen citizen participation in urban development and make the successes of urban development promotion visible. In Chemnitz, ideas, projects and stakeholders provide a forum for presentation and show residents and interested parties what can be and has become possible with urban development funding.
On this day, cities and municipalities throughout Germany provide information about their projects, plans and successes in urban development promotion
Day of urban development on 10 May 2025
Urban development funding is one of the most important instruments of urban development for strong neighbourhoods, an attractive living environment and a good life in the neighbourhood. The federal government, federal states and local authorities work together to ensure that homes - in small and large cities - remain beautiful and liveable.
On 10 May 2025, events will once again be held across Germany under the motto "Vibrant places, strong communities" to highlight the successes and show what urban development funding can achieve. On this day, the City of Chemnitz's Urban Planning and Property Office will be providing information about exciting European Capital of Culture projects that would not exist without urban development funding.
