History

Am Alten Tor

The Botanical School Garden in Chemnitz was founded in 1898 according to plans by garden director Otto Werner and school headmaster Paul Säurich. The garden was originally only 1 hectare in size and was extended to 1.75 hectares in 1933 with the addition of the orchard.

The aim was to create a botanical-biological educational garden. For this reason, the plants were divided into more than 50 groups such as dye plants, medicinal plants, conifers and others. From the very beginning of the botanical school garden, the managers endeavoured to divide the plants according to natural plant communities.
