Federal Archives - Stasi Records Archive Chemnitz
The holdings of the Federal Archives - Stasi Records Archive Chemnitz provide a unique insight into the SED dictatorship and its repressive apparatus in the former district of Karl-Marx-Stadt. The legacy of the district administration for state security includes around 7 kilometres of documents, approx. 2.3 million index cards, over 71,000 photographic documents and 200 audio recordings. A speciality of the archives are the documents of the so-called "Wismut" property administration, which monitored uranium mining, which was so crucial for the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
The Stasi Records Archive Chemnitz serves to research and communicate the regional history of the SED dictatorship. Private individuals as well as research and media representatives have the opportunity to inspect the Stasi files. With events, exhibitions, lectures and guided tours, the archive in Chemnitz offers numerous educational programmes on the work of the State Security on site, also in cooperation with memorial sites and archives in the surrounding area as well as reappraisal institutions and educational institutions in Saxony.
