The former family home of the artist Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, one of the most important German artists of the 20th century as a co-founder of the expressionist artists' group "Die Brücke", has been restored and reconstructed over the past few years in line with its listed status.
Following the Chemnitz City Council's decision in February 2023 to renovate the building in line with its listed status, the Karl Schmidt-Rottluff House, together with the neighbouring Wohnmühle, where Karl Schmidt-Rottluff spent his childhood, is a cultural attraction of Expressionism in the city. As a "place
of new beginnings", it is one of the intervention areas of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025.

The exhibition in the Karl Schmidt-Rottluff Haus gives interested visitors an insight into the life and works of the artist. It combines three large thematic blocks:
the work and biography of the artist, the history of Expressionism in Chemnitz and the history of the town during his lifetime. The rooms are dedicated to various sub-themes, such as life in Rottluff, school days and artistic beginnings, the Brücke period, the presentation of wooden and jewellery objects, as well as life in Chemnitz during the war.

The exhibition emphasises original works of art, faithful replicas, documents and biographical information relating to Chemnitz.
related to Chemnitz. Numerous exhibits come from important private collections, including the collection of Dr Victor and Hedda Peters
as well as a permanent loan from the Ostdeutsche Sparkassenstiftung together with the Sparkasse Chemnitz.

These include objects, drawings and documents that are being shown to the public for the first time ever.
The museum impresses not only with its exhibition, but also with its architecture. The restoration of the building in keeping with its listed status and the colourful design of the corridor as well as the reconstructed doors and historic windows make the building shine in new splendour. The barrier-free outdoor space, which connects the two buildings of the ensemble, invites visitors to linger and organise small events in warm weather.
