Planned new building for Chemnitz co-operation school
A two-stage artistic competition was organised for the planned new school building project "Cooperation School Chemnitz". In the first phase, artists and artist groups were invited to apply to take part in the competition. From the numerous applications, a jury selected ten artists or groups to take part in competition phase 2. Those selected were asked to develop a realisable artistic idea in line with the brief. The best proposals were honoured. The first prize was to be realised as part of the construction measures.
Due to the lower demand for school buildings for the Chemnitz school network, the construction of a new school was postponed and the Chemnitz City Council decided to locate the co-operation school in an existing school building. The realisation of the winning design in the existing building in question is currently being examined.
Winning design has been finalised
On 5 January 2023, the winning design for the "Kunst am Bau -Kooperationsschule Chemnitz" competition was selected by a jury of experts.
The winner was the design "Glass Balloon" by Nina Schuiki from Berlin.
The jury's verdict: "The idea of a hot air balloon as a surrounding shell and synonym for security is subtly placed in the school's entrance area in the form of a glass art design. The vestibule is to be understood as a transition between everyday life and school. The skilful arrangement of the glass sections creates a three-dimensional space that gives the viewer the feeling of entering the balloon and experiencing a sense of movement, freedom, discovery and adventure through the translucency and incidence of light. This stimulates the senses and makes you want to enter the school.
First place will receive prize money totalling 4,000 euros. In addition, the realisation of the design is currently being examined. A budget of €90,000 is available for this purpose.
