Construction of the western section of the park at the railway viaduct begins

Central intervention area of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025

The gardening and landscaping work for the construction of the western section of the railway viaduct intervention area will begin next week. The construction site facilities and storage areas of Deutsche Bahn AG were handed over to the City of Chemnitz in February 2025.
The construction site will be set up this week and the area where there used to be private terraced garages, among other things, will be cordoned off. The path connection to the city park will be interrupted during the construction period. A diversion will be made via the asphalted path to Beckerstrasse, which has already been constructed.

The entire area will be landscaped and enhanced with various hedges and trees. The asphalted new path surfaces will offer optimal utilisation characteristics for pedestrians and cyclists alike. Several bicycle racks will be installed for parking bicycles.

The entrance to the city park and the neighbouring open spaces will be created. Among other things, a viewing area will be built there, from which there will be a spectacular view of the railway viaduct. The staging of the railway viaduct will be completed with seating elements reworked from former bridge sections and a stylised locomotive.

The urban visualisation of the railway viaduct on Reichsstraße through the design of the surrounding open spaces is a central intervention area of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025.

This measure will also close the gap between Uferpark and Stadtpark and create a continuous green link between the Erzgebirge foothills and Chemnitz city centre.

The work is being carried out by the construction company Fachcenter Garten + STL Bau GmbH from Heinsdorfergrund/OT Hauptmannsgrün. Krüger Landschaftsarchitekten from Dresden is supervising the construction work.

The construction costs amount to approx. 315,000 euros. The project is being financed by funds from the "Intervention Areas" urban development programme of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025.

Information on the eastern section of the park
Construction work has been underway in the eastern section of the park since January 2025. The entire area where a tyre dealership used to be located is being landscaped and enhanced with various hedges and six tree plantings.
The footpath that currently runs along Beckerstrasse and Reichsstrasse will be abandoned and will cross the area in future. In the centre of the new eastern section of the park, a paved area will be created that can be used for multiple purposes. The aim here is to collaborate with the Chemnitzer Künstlerbund e. V. in the context of "Stadt am Fluss".
In addition, a seating sculpture will be erected adjacent to the area. Part of the old main girder of the railway viaduct will be reworked for this purpose.

The construction costs for the eastern section of the park amount to approx. 228,000 euros. The project is also being funded by the Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 programme.
