From Łódź to Timbuktu: seven delegations expected at the twin city conference

Conference at the Garage Campus sets the course for future projects - press conference on 7 May, 12.15 p.m.

From 6 to 9 May, around 25 official representatives from seven Chemnitz twin cities will be discussing the paths Chemnitz wants to take with its twin cities in the future.
Delegations from Düsseldorf, Ljubljana (Slovenia), Kirjat Bialik (Israel), Łódź (Poland), Manchester (UK), Tampere (Finland) and Timbuktu (Mali) will meet at the former tram depot and current garage campus at Zwickauer Straße 164.

Representatives of the media are invited to attend the first day of the conference, Wednesday, 7 May, from 9 a.m. to 12.45 p.m. with the following programme items:

At 9.30 a.m. , the following representatives from the twin cities will sign the Golden Book of the City of Chemnitz in the presence of Lord Mayor Sven Schulze:
- Miriam Koch, Councillor for Culture and Integration of the City of Düsseldorf,
- Jaakko Mustakallio, Deputy Mayor for Education and Culture of the City of Tampere,
- Ewa Wasik, Deputy Director of Culture of the City of Łódź,
- Alpha Oumar Cissé, representative of the city administration and director of the Timbuktu City Museum,
- Yana Ben Shushan, Executive Director of the Office of the Mayor of Kirjat Bialik,
- Daniel Dubowitz, Head of FLUX Atelier and International Lead at the Manchester School of Architecture, and
- Crnek Dejan, Deputy Mayor of the City of Ljubljana.

In addition to contributions from the administration on the introduction to the Capital of Culture and the cultural strategy, participants can expect a contribution from academics from the Manchester School of Architecture from 10.45 am. Dan Dubowitz and Mariam Pinto-Rodriguez have accompanied the Chemnitz Capital of Culture application since 2021 and, under the title "The Chemnitz Method", will present the changes Chemnitz has undergone in terms of urban planning as a result of the Capital of Culture title.

12.15 pm Lord Mayor Sven Schulze, Jaako Mustakallio, Mayor of Culture of Tampere, Miriam Koch, Councillor for Culture and Integration of the City of Düsseldorf, and Ewa Wasik, Deputy Director of Culture from Łódź, invite you to the press conference on the occasion of the twin city conference. The conference will be held in English.

After the first day of the conference focussed primarily on Chemnitz, the second day of the conference will see participants talking to each other. To this end, three workshops are planned in which representatives of institutions in Chemnitz will take part alongside the international guests. How can town twinning relationships be made visible? What opportunities are there to get young people interested in cross-border cooperation? How can projects be developed and promoted in the best possible way? A lively exchange of experiences between the various delegations will take place on these questions in the workshops.

The third day of the conference will focus on future cooperation. On Europe Day, the findings from Day 1 and the workshop results from Day 2 will be brought together. The aim of the final round of discussions is to identify and pool the overlaps between the delegations and, building on this, to explore opportunities for further cooperation between the cities and the European Capital of Culture 2025.

A more comprehensive documentation of the twin city conference will be available approximately four weeks after the end of the event. This will summarise the results of the conference and define further goals and possible projects.

In addition to the strategic work, the guests from the delegations can also expect city tours to the intervention areas of the European Capital of Culture, visits to the Gunzenhauser Museum and the Museum of Industry as well as participation in a commemorative event to mark 80 years since the end of the war on 8 May in Chemnitz Brühl.
