Thinking and celebrating Europe

Europe Week in Chemnitz invites international exchange, discussion, amazement and dancing

Chemnitz celebrates Europe from 6 to 10 May. Together with the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 gGmbH and other project partners, the city of Chemnitz is offering a diverse programme consisting of theatre performances, exhibitions, a music programme and discussion events. Europe Week is one of the highlight weeks in the year of the European Capital of Culture, during which the city of Chemnitz also welcomes numerous guests from Germany and abroad.

Lord Mayor Sven Schulze: "For me, Europe Week is a very special opportunity to showcase and experience the diversity of Europe in our city. Together with the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 gGmbH, we have put together a varied programme - from music and theatre to various exhibitions and exciting discussions. I'm delighted that so many events are accessible free of charge so that everyone can take part."

The programme

At the heart of Europe Week is the twin city conference from 7 to 9 May. Twenty-three guests from eight of Chemnitz's twin cities are expected to attend, including representatives from Tampere, Düsseldorf, Łódź, Ústí nad Labem, Kirjiat Bialik, Ljubljana, Manchester and Timbuktu. In addition to an exchange of expertise between the cities on the topics of culture and urban development, contributions on international work from the partner cities will be presented. Among them, representatives of the city of Manchester will present their studies on the "Chemnitz Method": Students and academics from the Manchester School of Architecture have accompanied the Chemnitz Capital of Culture application since 2021. The "Chemnitz Method" describes how Chemnitz has achieved change in the city with cultural programmes.

A panel discussion on the topic "Too much, too little, too foreign - what kind of EU do we want?" will take place on 7 May from 6 pm at Hartmannfabrik, Fabrikstraße 11. The panel discussion will feature the former President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, Nora Mandru, PhD student at the University of Leipzig, Dr Burkhard Müller, Chemnitz author and member of Chemnitz University of Technology, and Anne Lena Mösken, deputy editor-in-chief of Freie Presse Chemnitz. To mark the end of the Second World War exactly 80 years ago, Lord Mayor Sven Schulze invites you to theevent "Europe - remembering and thinking ahead" on 8 May at 3 pm at the bench for Justin Sonder on the Brühl. Among the guests will be Alexander Dierks, President of the State Parliament, and US Consul General John Crosby. The event will be accompanied by two dance performances organised by the Chemnitz Municipal Theatre Ballet, the Mejo Quartet and members of the Robert Schumann Philharmonic Orchestra Chemnitz as well as a play from the Chemnitz School Theatre Week.

On 9 May, Lord Mayor Sven Schulze welcomed around 500 invited guests from politics, business, European, national and municipal level to the Garage Campus.

The European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 gGmbH is offering a colourful and varied programme for Chemnitz residents and their guests in coordination with the city's European Week programme.

From 7 to 9 May, the Neumarkt in Chemnitz city centre will be transformed into a stage for European diversity. The concert series "Europe Sounds - Music connects Europe in Chemnitz "* marks another highlight of Europe Week. It offers a colourful stage programme for the whole family and impressively demonstrates the unifying power of music across all borders. For three days, bands, choirs and dance groups from Chemnitz's twin cities, partner regions and other European Capitals of Culture, among others, will present the colours of their home countries, bringing Europe to life. All visitors are cordially invited to experience this musical journey through Europe. Artists and bands from Kosovo, Spain, France, Romania, Portugal, Belgium, Armenia, Greece and Slovenia will be performing.

One of the largest intervention areas in the city of Chemnitz - the Garage Campus - will also be opening its doors from 6 to 9 May and inviting visitors to discover it. On 9 May, the Europe Festival will be celebrated at the Garage Campus, and #3000 Garages - The Exhibition at the Garage Campus will open at 5 pm.

In addition, a Czech Open Communitiy Kitchen in the U Brambory will invite you to eat and drink, the Fritz Theater theatre play will show "Die schöne Susanne", books from the 1945 book burning will be read aloud throughout the city at "Das Demokratische Chemnitz liest", international musicians will play unplugged concerts at the European Acoustic Festival in the Weltecho, and DJ Vika, an 86-year-old DJane from Poland, will play in the Garagenhof Turnstraße.

All guests are also invited to the exhibitions European Realities at the Gunzenhauser Museum, Tales of Transformation at the Chemnitz Industrial Museum, Eight planets, one star, one world (2025) by Mischa Kuball at the Stadtwirtschaft and Was Europa bewegtte - Von Fahrrad bis Automobil at the Museum für sächsische Fahrzeuge.

Prior to Europe Week, the renowned theatre festival NONSTOP Europa! will be staged at the Spinnbau in Chemnitz from 1 to 3 May. Under this year's title NONSTOP Europa! 2025, the festival stands for diversity, tolerance, democratic values, exchange and respect. It brings award-winning productions from the Czech Republic and Kazakhstan to the stage.
