On Sunday, 18 May, Sparkasse and Die Sportmacher GmbH are organising the Capital of Culture Marathon in Chemnitz. The running routes with various distances, which run through the city centre, the city park and the Küchwald forest, among other places, will be accompanied by extensive road closures and traffic restrictions. It is to be expected that there will be obstructions to the flow of traffic. Participants and visitors should inform themselves sufficiently in advance about the restrictions and access and parking options. Road closures for the running route
All roads in the area of the running route and all roads crossing the running route are closed:
Am Rathaus, Annaberger Straße, Treffurthstraße, Beckerstraße, Straßburger Straße, Rößlerstraße, Paul-Gruner-Straße, Johann-Esche-Straße, Kauffahrtei, Scheffelstraße, Aue , Deubners Weg, Bahnhofstraße, Bretgasse, Markt, Innere Klosterstraße, Jakobikirchplatz, Webergasse, Hartmannstraße, An der Markthalle, Bierbrücke, Fabrikstraße, Schloßstraße, Theunertstraße, Erich-Schmidt-Straße, Schloßberg, Salzstraße, Küchwaldstraße, Draisdorfer Straße, Dammweg, Schönherrstraße, Müllerstraße, Promenadenstraße, Arndtplatz, Arndtstraße, Georgstraße, Rochlitzer Straße, Mühlenstraße, Färberstraße, Karl-Liebknecht-Straße, Brückenstraße
The closed areas can be bypassed as follows: Leipziger Straße - Reichsstraße -Gustav-Freytag-Straße - Ritterstraße - Zschopauer Straße - Bahnhofstraße - Waisenstraße - Dresdner Straße - August-Bebel-Straße - Straße der Nationen - Christian-Wehner-Straße -Blankenauer Straße - Chemnitztalstraße - Bornaer Straße.
For the half marathon, in addition to all the roads mentioned above, the intersection of Reichsstraße and Annaberger Straße will be fully closed from 12 noon to 1 pm. This can be bypassed as follows: Leipziger Straße - Reichsstraße - Zwickauer Straße - Kappler Drehe - Neefestraße - Südring - Annaberger Straße - Gusatv-Freytag-Straße - Ritterstraße - Zschopauer Straße - Bahnhofstraße - Waisenstraße - Dresdner Straße - August-Bebel-Straße - Straße der Nationen - Christian-Wehner-Straße - Blankenauer Straße - Chemnitztalstraße - Bornaer Straße.
Construction of the road closures will begin at 5.30 am on Sunday 18 May and will be completed by around 8 am. Restrictions are therefore to be expected from 5.30 am.
During the running event, there will be no local traffic in the area of the running course and the closed roads. The organiser has informed local residents accordingly.
Event site
The Markt and Neumarkt areas will be used as the event site:
- The marathon and the relay marathon start at 9 a.m. on the Chemnitz market,
The finish time for the masses on the market is between 12.30 and 13.30. - The quarter marathon starts at 11.30 a.m. on the Chemnitz market,
The finish time for the masses on the market is between 12.15 and 12.45 pm. - The half marathon starts at 12.15 pm at the Chemnitz market,
Finish time of the masses on the market is between 2 and 2.30 pm
Stationary traffic
To keep the running route clear and for safety reasons, it is necessary to set up stopping restrictions. The stopping bans posted along the running route and the instructions of the stewards must be observed. The affected residents have been informed of the stopping restrictions by the organiser. The restrictions on stationary traffic will be monitored and enforced by the municipal enforcement service of the City of Chemnitz and apply to the following areas:
Saturday, 17 May, from 2 pm: Beckerstrasse from Reichsstrasse to Treffurthstrasse, Straßburger Strasse, Rößlerstrasse, Paul-Gruner-Strasse, Scheffelstrasse, Müllerstrasse, Färberstrasse, Karl-Liebknecht-Strasse, Käthe-Kollwitz-Strasse, Erich-Schmidt-Strasse and Schönherrstrasse from Nordstrasse towards Müllerstrasse.
Sunday, 18 May, from 5 a.m.: Aue, Hartmannstraße, An der Markthalle, Fabrikstraße, Erich-Schmidt-Straße, Schloßstraße, Theunertstraße, Promenadenstraße, Georgstraße, Brückenstraße, Schloßberg, Küchwaldstraße, Draisdorfer Straße, Henriettenstraße replacement stop area.
Illegally parked vehicles will be moved for a fee.
Residents within the cordoned-off areas who need their vehicle on Sunday are requested to park their vehicle outside the restricted areas in good time. It will not be possible to enter or exit during the closures. The following areas are affected:
Rößlerstraße from Straßburger Straße, Heinrich-Lorenz-Straße between Paul-Gruner-Straße and Kauffahrtei, Promenadenstraße between Erich-Schmidt-Straße and Georgstraße, Schloßstraße between Theunertstraße and Georgstraße, Arndtplatz, Am Alten Bad and Bretgasse.
Access for the fire and rescue services is always guaranteed.
Information for visitors
Locks will be set up in the Schloßteichstraße/Schloßberg (until 1 pm), Schönherrstraße/Pedestrian Island and Mühlenstraße/Georgstraße areas. The gates will be controlled by police officers. Crossing is only possible if there are no runners on the course in this area.
The city centre car parks not affected by the closure and the P&R car parks at the Messe, at the Gellertstraße stadium and on Lise-Meitner-Straße are available for parking. When using the P&R car parks, the Sunday timetable for public transport must be observed.
Local public transport
All public transport lines run according to the Sunday timetable. However, between 8.30 a.m. and 3.30 p.m., there will be changes to various train and bus routes.
Passengers can find maps for orientation and timetables for all lines on the CVAG website so that they can find out about their connections before or during the event.
The corresponding timetables for 18 May are only available digitally. They are also available at https://www.cvag.de/kulturhauptstadt. Alternatively, there is a QR code on each stop timetable that can be used to access the departures in real time.
