Professional recognition

The recognition of your foreign professional or university qualification can be an important prerequisite for working as a skilled worker in Chemnitz. Upon application, your certificates and diplomas will be checked by the competent authority in a recognition procedure. You will receive the result in a notification. Once recognised, your foreign university or professional qualification is deemed to be equivalent to a German qualification.

Recognition is mandatory for certain professions so that you are authorised to work in these professions. These are called regulated professions. These include professions in the fields of health, law, security, engineering or social services. But also professional titles such as engineers, specialists and master craftsmen.

Recognition can be helpful for many other professions, for example when applying for jobs or during salary negotiations. A certificate of recognition also helps a company to better assess your foreign qualifications.

The decision on a recognition procedure also depends on your country of origin. Nationals from third countries usually require recognition of their foreign professional qualification or the comparability of their university degree in order to obtain a visa. The anabin database of the Central Office for Foreign Education provides information on this.
