Driving licence

Anyone wishing to drive a motor vehicle on public roads in the Federal Republic of Germany generally requires a driving licence or a test certificate. Driving licences are issued in certain categories and can be limited in time in certain cases. The driving licence must be evidenced by an official certificate (driving licence or replacement certificate). The driving licence must be carried when driving motor vehicles and handed over to the responsible persons for inspection on request.
In the service portal of the City of Chemnitz you will find all the information you need to apply for driving licences in the relevant categories:
Rules for exchanging driving licences
By 2033, everyone in the EU should have a driving licence to the same standard. To achieve this, driving licences must be exchanged. The aim of the EU requirement is to achieve improved protection against forgery of driving licences and to record all driving licences in a database (Central Driving Licence Register at the Federal Motor Transport Authority).
