European Climate Award (eca)

In 2014, at the request of the Saxon State Ministry for the Environment and Agriculture (SMUL), the city of Chemnitz decided to participate as one of two Saxon municipalities in the "European Climate Award - Adaptation to Climate Change" pilot project organised by the eea federal office. The aim was to determine the extent to which the municipalities are prepared for the consequences of climate change and which measures need to be implemented in the near future. A total of ten municipalities from North Rhine-Westphalia and two municipalities from Saxony took part.
After three years of work, Chemnitz achieved the second level of certification in the external audit on 25 July 2017 with 51.4% of the possible points and thus achieved the best result of all 12 pilot municipalities. On 6 November 2017, the City of Chemnitz was honoured by the State Minister for the Environment and Agriculture, Mr Thomas Schmidt, in front of a large audience.
