Honour award Jens Fiedler
"In his cycling career and with his impressive track record, Jens Fiedler has not only written cycling history, but has also represented the city of Chemnitz in a worthy manner. He has made a decisive contribution to Chemnitz being known nationally and internationally as a centre of excellence in sport," said Lord Mayor Dr Peter Seifert in his laudatory speech at the award ceremony in front of the city councillors.
Jens began his career at Dynamo Dresden Nord in 1980, when he switched from swimming to cycling. Three years later, he went to the children's and youth sports school in Berlin and focussed all his energy on his sporting career. He achieved his first successes as a junior and became junior world champion in the track sprint in 1988. This was followed in 1991 by his first world championship title in this discipline, which he surpassed with an Olympic victory at the 1992 Summer Games in Barcelona. At the age of 22, he fulfilled the dream of every competitive athlete and could have left it at that.
But Jens Fiedler was always looking for new challenges and found them in the traditional keirin tour in Japan, which at the time was only reserved for professionals. He combined his switch to professional sport with a move to Chemnitz to join the successful duo of Michael Hübner and coach Karsten Schmalfuß. Lord Mayor Seifert: "A stroke of luck for Chemnitz, because the name Jens Fiedler has been firmly associated with our city for 13 years now."
The honorary prize was awarded on 25.05.2005.
