Chemnitz localities

Grüna was first mentioned in a document in 1263. The name refers to the surrounding area: "Grüne Au". To the north is the Rabenstein Forest with numerous recreational opportunities. On a clear day, the Maria-Josefa-Tower offers views as far as the ridges of the Erzgebirge or the Völkerschlachtdenkmal in Leipzig.

Initially, agriculture was the most important source of livelihood. From the 18th century onwards, Grüna developed into a centre of the textile trade thanks to the stocking and glove knitting industry. This was followed by numerous other, mainly smaller metalworking businesses. After 1900, larger companies in the metal industry began production, including the oldest Saxon pressure gauge factory, a needle bar factory, a pump factory and the Kratos-Werke, the largest German manufacturer of wire drawing machines. Top-quality products were manufactured in the state-owned companies until 1990. With the end of the GDR, however, these went out of business in 1990.
New, modern jobs were then created, particularly in the "An der Wiesenmühle" industrial estate.
In the middle of the 19th century, mining was attempted in three places, but without success. A residual dump of the "Beharrlichkeitsschacht" can still be found today as "Hexenberg" in the residential area of the same name.
The most famous name in Grüna's history is that of the former chief forester Ernst Georg August Baumgarten, who worked here from 1871 to 1882 and invented and built a dirigible airship. Bertrand Stahringer, who opened his naturopathic clinic in Grüna in 1893, is also worthy of mention. This building, which has been preserved, is one of Grüna's most striking buildings, some of which are listed, along with the Alte Oberförsterei, the Alte Apotheke, the town hall and the Folklorehof ensemble. The Kreuzkirche church characterises the townscape.
Grüna has a rich social life with over 30 clubs and societies. Traditional festivals include the funfair, the Baumgartentag (tree garden day), the pyramid display and the Christmas market.
