Cremation of equidae

The obligation to dispose of animal by-products in the federal state of Saxony is the responsibility of the districts and independent towns. These have transferred the disposal obligation to the Zweckverband für Tierkörperbeseitigung Sachsen in Priestewitz / OT Lenz. The carcasses of dead equidae (horses, donkeys, mules, zebras and zebroids) must be handed over to this special-purpose association by the animal owner. With the amendment to the Animal By-products Disposal Act (TierNebG), it has been possible since February 2017 to submit an application for an exemption licence in accordance with Section 4 (2) TierNebG for the collection and cremation of an equine animal in an approved animal crematorium.
It is not possible to grant an exemption from the basic disposal obligation in advance, i.e. before the animal dies. The collection of a dead equid from a site of the Saxony State Examination Centre for Health and Veterinary Services for cremation is also excluded for epidemiological reasons.
If the livestock owner wishes to make use of the possibility of exemption in the event of the death of his equidae, the information in the information sheet must be observed and the corresponding application must be submitted.
