There are currently around 9,000 dogs in Chemnitz. To ensure the peaceful coexistence of dog owners and non-dog owners in Chemnitz, the police ord inance of the city of Chemnitz regulates, among other things, the keeping of animals and the circumstances of contamination by animals.

According to the police regulations, animals must be kept and supervised in such a way that people, animals and property are not harassed or endangered. On public roads, the pet owner must ensure that the animal is supervised by a suitable person.

Dogs must be kept on a lead on public roads and in green and recreational areas, unless they are designated off-leash areas.
Exceptions are made for guide dogs for the blind.

The police regulations also stipulate that owners and handlers of animals are prohibited from allowing their animals to foul public roads and green and recreational areas.

Violations can be penalised with a fine of at least 5 euros and a maximum of 1,000 euros and a maximum of 500 euros for negligent violations.
