Chemnitz contemporary witnesses: Lothar Hupf
We lived at Lutherstrasse 30 on 5 March 1945 and were hit by a bomb or aerial mine in the cellar during the attack and the cellar ceiling came down and 18 people were buried, including my mother and my sister. Our cellar was cleared by two men, fellow residents of house number 30, and we were able to escape through the breach in the wall through the cellar of Lutherstrasse 32 into the open. We then escaped through the gardens, which are still there today, through the brick building that still stands in Zschopauerstrasse. When we got outside from 32 to the gardens, the air was burning and we rolled in the snow to avoid catching fire. It then got better in Zschopauerstrasse. If I remember correctly, 13 people died in our cellar, including one of my mother's sisters and her 5-month-old son, who were visiting us and already had a ticket back to Kaiserslautern for 7 March 1945.
