Central Saxony Transport Association (VMS)

In 1997, the districts and independent cities of the Central Saxony transport association founded the Central Saxony Transport Association (ZVMS).The ZVMS draws up the local transport plans for the Chemnitz/Zwickau local transport area and ensures the coordination of cross-border public transport services and the applicable fares.

The fulfilment of tasks for the ZVMS has been carried out by Verkehrsverbund Mittelsachsen GmbH (VMS GmbH) since 2004.

The area covered by Verkehrsverbund Mittelsachsen (VMS) includes the independent city of Chemnitz, the districts of Erzgebirgskreis and Zwickau as well as parts of the district of Mittelsachsen (former districts of Freiberg and Mittweida).

The common goal is to create a transport association with an integrated local road and rail transport service in the Central Saxony region. This clearly outlines the tasks of theVMS:

  • Integration of public transport services in the network area through a joint tariff
  • Conceptual further development of the transport network
  • Coordination of the services offered by the transport companies involved in the network

Together, all participants strive to secure and gradually improve the modal split (distribution of modes of transport[car and public transport] in favour of public transport).
