The registration office of the Citizens' Office of the City of Chemnitz would like to remind you to check whether your identity cards and passports are still valid in good time before the start of the summer holidays and the travel season. The period of validity of identity documents cannot be extended. A new application is therefore necessary.
The following documents must be submitted: the previous identity document as well as the birth or marriage certificate (or family record book if available) to check the current name. A current 35 x 45 millimetre photograph (suitable for biometrics) is also required.
Change from 1 May
From 1 May 2025, photographs will only be accepted in digital form. These will be taken by certified photographers who upload them to a cloud or directly when applying for the documents at the authority.
Passport photos, signatures and fingerprints (biometric data) can be taken at the Bürgerhaus am Wall. There is a registration terminal in the waiting area of the residents' registration office on the second floor. This is also suitable for wheelchair users and children over 1.20 metres tall. The fee for the photo is currently 5 euros, from 1 May 2025 the fee will be 6 euros. As part of the switch to digital passport photos on 1 May 2025, more citizen service points will be equipped with photo capture technology.
Important information
Please note that a new visit will be required if the required documents cannot be presented. The application must be made in person, as the identity of the applicant must be checked by the authorities.
Before travelling abroad, citizens should find out about the entry requirements and recognition of documents, e.g. from tour operators, embassies or the Federal Foreign Office(www.auswaertiges-amt.de), in order to avoid any inconvenience when crossing the border. The registration office cannot provide any binding information on the entry requirements of individual countries.
It should also be noted that children from birth onwards must have their own identity document when travelling abroad. Which document must be applied for for the child depends primarily on the destination. Since 1 January 2024, children's passports are no longer issued or renewed. Therefore, only passports or identity cards will be considered. When applying, the child must be present for identity verification.
Fees
The following fees currently apply: ID card 37 euros (for applicants under 24 years 22.80 euros), passport 70 euros (for applicants under 24 years 37.50 euros). The fee must be paid at the time of application. From the time of application to the completion of the documents, approximately 4 to 6 weeks must be planned. If necessary, an express passport can be applied for, which can be produced by the Bundesdruckerei within three working days. However, an additional express fee of 32 euros must be paid for this.
Opening hours
The current office hours of the registration office (Düsseldorfer Platz 1) are: Mondays and Fridays from 8 am to 12 noon, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 am to 6 pm and Saturdays from 9 am to 1 pm (by appointment only).
Documents can also be applied for at the citizen service centres of the City of Chemnitz. An appointment is usually required for this. The office hours of the citizen service centres and further information can be obtained by calling the public authority number 115. It is also possible to book an appointment for the application there.
