Regional showcase opens - TIETZ forecourt goes green

38 cities and municipalities make culture visible - GGG and the city focus on unsealing and diversity

Today, Tuesday, two projects were presented at the TIETZ: the opening of the regional showcase in the inner courtyard and the greening of the TIETZ forecourt on Reitbahnstraße.

Showcase for 38 municipalities
The regional showcase makes the Capital of Culture Region 2025 visible in the centre of Chemnitz. Until the end of the year, all 38 municipalities will be presented on ten pillars next to the Petrified Forest on the ground floor of the TIETZ with information, event details and QR codes for further offers. Two of the main projects of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 are also on display: Makers, Business & Arts and the Purple Path art and sculpture trail. Brochures and invitations to projects and events are available on a regional shelf. The space also offers room to help shape the area: Artists and committed associations from the region can present themselves on the stage on the ground floor of the TIETZ. The ideas for utilisation were developed together with the municipalities as part of the municipal networking meetings.

Erik Seidel, Mayor of Gersdorf: "Whether culture, sport or voluntary work - the Capital of Culture Region thrives on its diversity. It is something special for a municipality like Gersdorf to be visible here at the TIETZ in Chemnitz. This not only strengthens togetherness in the region, but also invites people to visit us - along the Purple Path, for example. I am delighted when many people use this opportunity to discover new things in our region."
Matthias Groschwitz, spokesperson for the Capital of Culture mayors' task force: "The regional showcase will make the Capital of Culture region visible in the centre of Chemnitz. The TIETZ will thus become a central point of contact for all those who want to discover our diverse region. The creation of this showcase was a thoroughly positive, joint process - supported by close cooperation between the city and the region."

More greenery for the cultural centre
Mayor of Culture Dagmar Ruscheinsky and Simone Kalew, Managing Director of Grundstücks- und Gebäudewirtschafts-Gesellschaft mbH (GGG), also presented the ongoing redesign of the TIETZ forecourt. Around 300 square metres of granite slabs have been unsealed and will be replaced by climate-resilient plants. These plants range in height from ferns and perennials to two trees, which contribute to the development of species-rich plant communities. The reused granite slabs are integrated as walls for bed edgings and as seating. New bicycle stands and a water-retaining substructure round off the design. The aim is to significantly improve the quality of the area.

The civil engineering work began in the fourth quarter of 2024 and the planting work is currently underway. They are based on a design that also draws on input from children and young people. A special accent of the planting is the Caucasian wingnut. This will be followed in October by a cornelian cherry, which will be planted at the TIETZ on the occasion of the International Pomology Meeting.

The project is being realised by GGG together with the City of Chemnitz and is part of the sustainable urban development for the Capital of Culture Year 2025. The investment volume for the entire project is around 180,000 euros. The remodelling was planned by planA Andrea Alter Landschaftsarchitektin. The company Techno-Farm und Service GmbH from Neukirchen/Adorf, which is also responsible for the remodelling of the forecourt, will be responsible for maintaining the beds over the next three years. At the same time, an initiative is being sought to support the maintenance of the plantings under professional guidance and actively contribute to the revitalisation of the square.

Dagmar Ruscheinsky, Mayor of Culture: "In the Capital of Culture year 2025, we not only want to celebrate culture, but also provide sustainable impetus for urban development. The new TIETZ forecourt shows how urban planning quality, climate adaptation and cultural use interact - the TIETZ forecourt is therefore a place that carries the idea of the European Capital of Culture into everyday life."

Simone Kalew, Managing Director of Grundstücks- und Gebäudewirtschafts-Gesellschaft mbH: "The planting of the forecourt at the DAStietz cultural centre will begin this week. We are further enhancing the quality of the area, integrating the existing works of art and creating seating areas with natural shade provided by newly planted trees. Visitors to the TIETZ will also find additional parking facilities for their bicycles."
