The mascot Spuffel invited the people of Chemnitz to get active. Until 30 September, numerous clubs, associations, companies, etc. in Chemnitz offered a wide range of sports activities for people of all ages and abilities under the motto #BeActive. The events spanned the entire city area. Whether at the Floorball Open-Play at the Roter Turm, presented by the Chemnitz ambassadors of the action week, the Floor Fighters, or a coffee trip to the Oberwald reservoir. Younger and older people and people with disabilities had the opportunity to try out Chemnitz sports clubs, whether it was football, judo or a more relaxed yoga session.

Citizens enjoyed the opportunity to try out and take part in a wide range of sporting activities during this time. The wide range of activities on offer not only appealed to existing sports enthusiasts, but also to those who had not yet found the right sports programme for them or were curious about what the sports week had to offer.

Yoga on the bike

On 25 September, all cyclists were able to enjoy a free yoga class in the city park between the Rosarium and the bridge (Voigtscher Park). Using their own bikes, Kontrast-Reich demonstrated exercises to relieve strain on the wrists, back and bum when cycling.

"The yoga I'm talking about actively involves your favourite means of transport, just not for getting around. We will practise the top 10 cycling yoga asanas and provide relief for strained wrists, backs and bums. You will not only practise stretching, but also slip into various postures that give you support on the saddle and ground you in the best possible way.

Get involved and experience the variety of standing and lying positions with like-minded people, which are worthwhile for every cyclist. I look forward to a varied hour with you in the midst of nature - pure enjoyment. You will return to cycling with more balance and want more of it."

Review 2022

An eventful week in Chemnitz

Die Europäische Woche des Sports 2022

Chemnitz residents were able to try out and take part in everything to do with sport and exercise during the European Week of Sport in 2022. The wide range of activities on offer not only attracted sports enthusiasts, but also anyone who had not yet found the right sports programme for them or was simply curious about what the sports week had to offer. Various sports were tried out and discovered free of charge by those interested, and hikes and cycle tours were organised both inside and outside Chemnitz.

Whether it was a floorball open play at the Roter Turm (offered by the Chemnitz ambassadors, the Floor Fighters), a cycle tour between Chemnitz and Leipzig or table football in the Rosenhof - the programme not only attracted people to get active themselves, but also to watch and be amazed. Children and adults alike tried out the sports on offer at the Chemnitz sports clubs, for example football or fencing. Those who prefer a more relaxed approach can calm down with progressive muscle relaxation.

The STAUNT festival was also there, complementing the sports programme with activities relating to the Chemnitz cultural scene.

About the European Week of Sport

The campaign was launched in 2015 to counteract the declining trend in sports participation in European countries. In Germany, theDeutscher Turner-Bund e. V.is organising the campaign under the motto#BeActive.

The European Week of Sport offers a wide variety of sporting activities and invites people toget active. It can be used, above all, to inspire new members to take part in club sport and thus promote joint sporting activities in clubs. However, companies, schools, towns and municipalities can also take part in the campaign by focussing onsport and exercise during this week.

Sporting activity has a positive impact on physical and mental well-being. It also promotes social cohesion and creates a sense of community.

TheEU Office of the City of Chemnitz is coordinating the action week in the city. If you would like to contribute to the week with an activity or need support, please get in touch with the contact on the left. A flyer with all the events will be produced in August.
