Climate protection sub-concept for renewable energies

In order to achieve extensive greenhouse gas neutrality for the city of Chemnitz by 2040 at the latest, or even earlier if possible (in accordance with resolution B-156/2022), the proportion of renewable energies in the electricity and heating sectors must be increased. In order to determine the potential of renewable energies in Chemnitz, a climate protection sub-concept for renewable energies for Chemnitz was created in 2019 with funding from the Federal Ministryfor the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection(BMUV).

In addition to the sector-related energy and greenhouse gas balance, the concept contains a presentation of the current status of renewable energies in Chemnitz as well as an analysis of the potential of all renewable energies available or that can be supplied in the city area. Specific proposals for measures were also drawn up, which were developed in a participatory process involving various departments of Chemnitz City Council and eins energie in sachsen GmbH.

Electricity and heat from renewable energy sources

Illustration of the installed capacity from renewable energy sources in the city of Chemnitz. An installed capacity of 81.9 megawatts (MW) was installed in the city of Chemnitz in 2021.

Illustration of the yield from renewable thermal energy plants in Chemnitz in 2020 in GWh. This results in a total volume of approx. 148 GWh of renewable heat. This still corresponds to approx. 6 % of heat consumption in Chemnitz. Further information can be found in the climate protection sub-concept for renewable energies.
