Around 1200, the valley of the Pleißenbach stream between Bornaer Weg and Löbenhain was given to settler leader Rüdiger for clearing. He had the land on both sides of the stream divided into 34 Franconian Hufen. One hoof was sufficient for the livelihood of a farming family. These owners of the 34 farms are thus the founders of Rüdigersdorf, today's Röhrsdorf. A document about the founding of our village has not yet been found, but over 50 years ago the year 1207 was agreed upon.
The history of the village and the church are closely linked. At the end of the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and Reformation led to immense developments in crafts, trade and commerce, in society and in intellectual life.
The current spelling of our village was first recorded in the church register, with "Röhrsdorf" being documented since 1641. In 1839, the municipal council took over the administration of the village with the Landgemeindeordnung.
With the onset of the industrial revolution at the end of the 18th century, hosiery and glove makers as well as weavers settled in cottage flats as homeworkers, who later became factory workers.
On 1 July 1901, the municipalities of Röhrsdorf and Löbenhain merged. In 1907, the current school building was inaugurated (with around 650 pupils at the time).
After 1945, Röhrsdorf developed into an efficient industrial and agricultural location, with cooperative and individual farming, a supra-regional transformer station (today: 50hertz), the Chemnitz Center (Saxony's largest shopping centre), the motorway maintenance depot and a further 165 or so commercial and craft businesses (excluding the Chemnitz Center).
