Information for cattle farmers
The cattle herds in the Free State of Saxony are considered "disease-free" from the cattle diseases bovine viral diarrhoea (BVD), infectious bovine rhinotracheitis / infectious pustular vulvovginitis (IBR/IPV), bovine brucellosis and bovine leucosis.

New regulations must be observed to maintain this disease status.
Bovine viral diarrhoea (BVD)
On 9 January 2025, the State Directorate of Saxony issued a general ruling on monitoring the maintenance of the status "Free from Bovine Viral Diarrhoea (BVD)". (Link, Annex 4 AV BVD)
In principle, all newborn calves must be virologically tested for BVD by ear puncture within 20 days of birth.
In BVD-free areas on farms with a stable negative herd status, ear punching of calves can be replaced by suitable serological testing methods. The veterinary office responsible for the location where the animals are kept must be contacted for this purpose. After submission of the notification to determine the BVD serological herd status, the veterinary office will regulate the further procedure.
Infectious bovine rhinotracheitis / Infectious pustular vulvovginitis (IBR/IPV)
Brucellosis of cattle
Bovine leucosis
On 9 January 2025, the State Directorate of Saxony issued a general decree to maintain the "disease-free" status for the cattle diseases IBR/IPV, brucellosis and leucosis within the Free State of Saxony.
Depending on the type of farm, random tests for IBR/IPV are ordered annually by the competent authority. To monitor brucellosis, the abortion material and, alternatively, the dam must be tested in the event of increased abortion activity.
