Civil protection: Evacuation - "What to do?"
If a hazardous situation leads to an evacuation, this means that all persons in the endangered area must leave immediately.
Conversely, nobody can enter the danger zone.
An evacuation is for the safety of all citizens.
It applies as long as there is a danger or the all-clear is given.
The most important rules during an evacuation
Follow the instructions of the emergency services!
The instructions of the emergency services involved in the evacuation must be followed. Their task is to clear the defined exclusion zone as quickly as possible. All those involved will endeavour to keep the evacuation time as short as possible.
Do I have to leave my home?
Yes, in the event of an evacuation or evacuation due to a dangerous situation, you are obliged to leave your home if you are given an "official order to evacuate".
Please note that the enforcement authorities must also use "direct coercion" if you do not comply with the official order to evacuate. Please avoid this in the interests of everyone!
An evacuation is always necessary if there is an acute danger to life and limb. Also for your life.
Keep yourself informed!
Many questions arise during evacuations...
Am I affected? What do I need to take with me? Where can I find accommodation? How do I find out when I can return home?
Find out via the regional media, the city's website, social media(Facebook / Twitter) or via the city of Chemnitz's citizens' hotline, which is activated in the event of major operations and hazardous situations.
Help your neighbours!
If there are people in need of help in your neighbourhood, please inform the emergency services that there are neighbours in need of help. Thank you very much!
Where to go in the event of an evacuation?
If you can find your own accommodation in the event of an evacuation, this is always the better solution, for example with family, friends, acquaintances or work colleagues.
Your own garden is also a good option.
Please note that independent accommodation in a hotel or guesthouse is only possible at your own expense.
If you have found your own accommodation, you do not have to register or deregister.
You can move freely outside the restricted area at any time. You can run personal errands or use catering or leisure facilities.
However, you can only return to the restricted area once it has been cleared! No exceptions are permitted here! (...not even "just to get something").
Official emergency accommodation
The City of Chemnitz is providing emergency accommodation for citizens who do not have individual accommodation. Please note that places are limited. Personal and individual care is not possible here.
Bringing pets of any kind is prohibited!
Emergency shelters are disaster control facilities and only have to fulfil the following minimum requirements:
- Protection from the weather
- Basic sanitary conditions
- Basic supply of food and drink after 12 hours at the earliest
- Provision of medical assistance on the basis of first aid
Please note that for organisational reasons it is essential that you register or deregister at official emergency shelters.
How do I know when an evacuation has ended?
Via the news in the media or publication on the Internet, the citizens' telephone or the emergency services on site. In addition, the end of an evacuation is announced via the NINA warning app.
Emergency luggage includes, for example:
- Identity card, health insurance card, important personal documents
- Cash card, mobile phone, personal telephone numbers
- Personal medication
- Toiletries and tissues
- Glasses, hearing aids and other aids you may need
- Food and drink for at least 12 hours

Take adequate care of your pets if you cannot take them with you (e.g. if you are staying in official emergency accommodation).
You are free to decide how you leave the evacuation area. You can walk, drive your own car or cycle. If you wish to use public transport, you should expect changes to the timetable and route due to the emergency situation.
Separate means of transport, such as buses, will be provided for those who wish to go to official emergency accommodation. These will depart from assembly points. You will be informed of the assembly points by the emergency services or the media. Transport to the official emergency shelters is free of charge for you.
If you require special means of transport for wheelchairs or for travelling lying down, please let us know as early as possible. There may be waiting times. Please be patient.
The corresponding return transport from the official emergency accommodation centres will be provided free of charge.
Please note that it is not possible for you to register independently, e.g. for patient transport!
Please note that there is no legal entitlement to reimbursement of costs for means of transport such as taxis, transport services, etc. that you have ordered yourself.
