On 19 June 2019, Saxony's Minister President Michael Kretschmer and Lord Mayor Barbara Ludwig signed an agreement on the development of Chemnitz city centre.

The Free State of Saxony and the City of Chemnitz have a common goal: the urban development of Chemnitz city centre and the accommodation of important state institutions - economically and attractively for citizens.

The agreement places particular focus on the development areas in the theatre quarter between Brückenstraße and Käthe-Kollwitz-Straße and the current central bus station as the university location Aktienspinnerei.

Urban development framework planning for the theatre district

The further development of the theatre district will take place by mid-2020 through the development of an urban development framework plan based on the urban development study prepared by AS + P, which will then be put on public display. The requirements of the Free State and the City of Chemnitz will be taken into account by dividing up the areas. The necessary media relocation services will be planned by the end of 2019. Furthermore, the Free State is developing a utilisation concept for the areas to be used by it.

Brückenstraße building to become more permeable

For the state-owned building at Brückenstraße 10, a generous permeability of the building will be created with the aim of achieving a better visible axis in the direction of the art collection/opera.

Development of the space at the university site Aktienspinnerei

There is agreement on the Aktienspinnerei university site that the site of the central bus station should be purchased and developed by the Free State following the complete relocation of the transport companies. The target date for the purchase is 2021, based on the legally valid development plan no. 96/23 "Schillerplatz/Aktienspinnerei" - southern sub-area of the Aktienspinnerei.
