Theatre
Various refurbishment measures are intended to support the creative use of the traditional venue. As the need for refurbishment is greater than initially thought, the Chemnitz Theatre Theatre will remain in its "alternative quarters" in the Spinnbau in Altchemnitzer Straße during the Capital of Culture title year. The overall project is currently being re-evaluated in order to develop a long-term solution for the Chemnitz Theatre Playhouse.

Theatre renovation project is reassessed
Alternatives for the Chemnitz theatre are being examined
The theatre renovation project must be reassessed. This was decided by the city council on 28 February 2024. Intensive investigations by experts have shown that modernising the Schauspielhaus to today's standards will cost significantly more than the previously estimated budget of around 16 million euros.
According to the new documents, the previously planned schedule, which envisaged the theatre opening in 2026, is also no longer realistic. In order to find a long-term, sustainable and appropriate solution for the Chemnitz theatres, the City of Chemnitz will now examine and investigate alternatives together with the City Council and the theatres.
The theatre and puppet theatre are currently housed in the Spinnbau in Altchemnitz and can continue to use this venue.

With regard to the future use of the Schauspielhaus, the City of Chemnitz and Chemnitz Theatre have come to the joint conclusion that a return to the theatre is not realistic until 2026. The reason for this is the weak points found in the theatre during the current investigations, which need to be renovated in addition to the necessary fire safety upgrades. Added to this is the difficult situation in the construction industry. However, in order to maintain the theatre's offering, performances will continue to take place in the Spinnbau.
General Director Dr Christoph Dittrich: "The current investigations have revealed more negative findings than expected. It also makes sense to remain in the Spinnbau until the refurbishment of the Schauspielhaus has been completed in order to put the extensive programme for the Capital of Culture year on a secure footing."
