Stadt am Fluss is an infrastructure project that was given high priority at the workshop on the intervention areas with Chemnitz citizens in November 2018. It revitalises urban areas along the Chemnitz river: prelude at the source, city park - former river bath, city park - at the weir, railway viaduct, riverside park - industrial history on the river. The areas will become public (cultural) places to meet the "quiet centre" and enter into conversation with it, especially those people who do not yet trust their inner creative artists.

The railway viaduct should actually have been demolished by its owner, Deutsche Bundesbahn AG, but the citizens successfully campaigned to preserve it. The viaduct thus became a symbol of civic commitment. A citizens' association was founded for this purpose, which is also involved in the development of the European Capital of Culture 2025 programme

On the Chemnitz river

The railway viaduct was actually supposed to be demolished by Deutsche Bahn AG, but the citizens successfully campaigned to preserve it. The viaduct thus became a symbol of civic commitment - and now shines completely restored as an industrial monument. As an intervention area, the area under the viaduct is being redesigned as an entrance to the city park. Further upstream and downstream, there are three other worthwhile places along the river. They invite you to linger by the water.

District park at Pleißenbach

The neighbourhood park on Pleißenbach is part of "Stadt am Fluss". The site of the former Altendorf goods station between Beyerstrasse and Rudolf-Krahl-Strasse is currently characterised by wasteland, succession and an ecologically disadvantaged, heavily built-up natural area. Now, following the withdrawal of the railway, there is an opportunity to create a new part of the city with open spaces for public use as well as further areas for housing, community use and commerce, including flood protection.

On Monday, 3 June 2024, the "Am Feldschlößchen" play and rest area was officially opened in the presence of Mayor Michael Stötzer. To mark International Children's Day, young guests were treated to a sweet surprise. A new play and rest area has been created on the intervention area of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025, which invites young and old to linger, relax, play and engage in sporting activities. The area opposite the tram museum and the garage campus, between the Kappelbach stream and the existing footpath and cycle path, had been lying dormant until then.
