Deadlines and authorities

Relocation to Chemnitz

If you move to Chemnitz, you must register with the registration office within two weeks of moving in. You can submit the application in person or through a representative with power of attorney or a legal representative.

You can register at the address:
Citizens' Registration Office
Registration office, citizen service
Community centre at Wall
Düsseldorfer Platz 1 (2nd floor)
09111 Chemnitz

or at one of the citizen service centres in the city area.

Please make an appointment with the registration office in advance. Appointments can be made via the online appointment portal or by dialling 115.

During your appointment at the authority, the registration form will be created on site and processed together with the necessary documents.

Please bring the originals of these documents with you to your appointment:

  • Valid personal documents (identity card or passport) of all persons to be registered
  • Confirmation of the landlord with signature
  • Minor children: Declaration of consent from the legal guardian with signature

If you are moving to Chemnitz from abroad, you will also need

  • Proof of marital status (if married, divorced, widowed) in German translation
  • for underage children: Identity document and birth certificate in German translation

If you are not applying in person, you will also need

  • Registration form with signature
  • Power of attorney with signature

The address will be changed on all identity documents. You must therefore bring the originals with you.

The landlord must confirm that you or your family have moved into the flat. Housing providers are landlords or their authorised representatives, e.g. housing management companies, but also the flat owners themselves or the main tenants who sublet their accommodation. To do this, the landlord must complete the "Landlord's confirmation of residence" form. The completed and signed form must be submitted to the registration office. The tenancy agreement alone is not sufficient.

After registration, you will receive an official confirmation of registration as proof.

Foreign driving licence

If you come from an EU country or the European Economic Area EEA (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway), your driving licence is also valid in Germany.

For nationals from third countries, such as the USA, Switzerland, Great Britain and others, there are different regulations. If you move to Chemnitz, you may drive with your foreign driving licence for six months. The date counts from the date you register your residence in Chemnitz. The prerequisite is that you have a translation in German with you for all journeys. If you have an international driving licence, you do not need a translation. After the deadline, your foreign driving licence will no longer be recognised. You must have it converted into a German driving licence.

You may have to pass a theoretical and practical driving test. This depends on the country in which your driving licence was issued. You can obtain information at the driving licence office in the Bürgerhaus am Wall.

Please remember to make an appointment in person at the driving licence authority in good time to apply for the transfer of your foreign driving licence! The processing time takes six to eight weeks.

The application is made at the address:

Citizens' Registration Office
Driving licence authority
Community centre at Wall
Düsseldorfer Platz 1
09111 Chemnitz
