Flood hazard maps for the city of Chemnitz

Hazard maps visualise the risks posed by floods to people and property. For flood events with different (e.g. 50-, 100-year) recurrence intervals, the expected floods are shown in their spatial extent as well as bridge/culvert structures endangered by damming and overflowing. In Chemnitz, hazard maps are available for the Würschnitz, Zwönitz, Chemnitz, Kappelbach and Pleißenbach watercourses.

Notes on the up-to-dateness of the flood risk and flood hazard maps for the Pleißenbach

Based on the results of the flood protection concept finalised in 2010, the Pleißenbach was designated as a floodplain within the city of Chemnitz for the first time in 2011. Flood hazard and flood risk maps were also created on this basis.

As part of a study commissioned by the City of Chemnitz Transport and Civil Engineering Department, a new rainfall-runoff model was developed for the Pleißenbach in 2020, which takes into account the changes that have occurred in the catchment area since 2011 as well as more recent data from the German Weather Service on precipitation events. On this basis, new working maps were created of the areas that, according to the calculations, would be flooded in the event of a flood event that is statistically expected once every 100 years (HQ100). These areas were newly designated as floodplains in 2021.

A complete revision of the flood risk management plan for the Pleißenbach is still required for the revision of the flood hazard and flood risk maps. As the Pleißenbach has its source in the district of Zwickau, this must be carried out jointly with the town of Limbach-Oberfrohna. Corresponding coordination is already underway, but completion is not expected before 2025.

As the old flood hazard maps for the Pleißenbach from 2010 no longer correctly depict the flood risk, the working maps for the designation of the floodplain, which are provided below, should be used to better assess the risk. Information can also be obtained from the lower water authority using the contact details provided.
