CITY NATURE campaign "MAKE IT GREENER"

"MACH'S GRÜNER" is the title of a campaign for Chemnitz's urban nature. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the topic and highlight the opportunities for each individual to influence our urban nature. The urban nature team, consisting of the city planning office, environmental office and green space office, is organised behind the slogan. The campaign was launched in September 2023 with the "Make it greener" days. These will be held annually from now on. The Climate Adaptation Week of the Centre for Climate Adaptation (ZKA) and the campaign week for green buildings of the Bundesverband GebäudeGrün e.V. (BuGG) will be used as a hook.

The "MACH'S GRÜNER" days will take place for the second time in 2024.

A diverse programme awaits Chemnitz residents from 16 to 20 September. The programme includes an Urban Nature Slam, where poets will share their thoughts on urban nature, and an Urban Nature Walk, which will take participants through green oases in the city. The programme is complemented by a World Café and various workshops that deal intensively with the topic of biodiversity.

It will be particularly exciting for the young people of Chemnitz: from 26 September to 2 October, pupils from second to fifth grade can take part in the "NBS x Minecraft" project. They will have the opportunity to design green solutions for the city using the game "Minecraft" and learn through play how nature-based solutions (NBS) can help overcome local challenges such as climate change.

Campaign 2024

Trees are essential for urban nature as they improve air quality, provide shade and offer habitats for animals. The felling of trees should be avoided as they regulate the urban climate and promote the well-being of residents, especially on hot summer days. The preservation and protection of trees is therefore of great importance for sustainable urban development. Hug me dont cut me.

Green meadows or flowering meadows that are rarely mowed promote biodiversity, as they create habitats for a variety of insects, birds and plants that cannot be found in regularly mowed meadows. They also help to improve soil quality and store CO2. They also offer recreation for city dwellers. Are you already mowing or still chilling?

Campaign 2023

Gardens designed close to nature are ecologically more valuable than gravelled gardens. They have various structures and harbour native plants, flowering islands and shrubs, among other things, and thus provide a habitat for native fauna. Furthermore, near-natural gardens contribute to a favourable microclimate through their planting and mitigate the consequences of heavy rainfall events.

Green balconies, courtyards, façades and roofs provide a habitat for plants, animals and insects in urban areas thanks to their ecological diversity. A green balcony or courtyard also provides shade and contributes to personal well-being. Green buildings are better insulated and have lower energy requirements than comparable buildings without greenery.
