Revitalisation of the property at Hans-Ziegler-Straße 6-8, former Kepler-Gymnasium
Brownfield programme of the Free State of Saxony
The three-storey school building with gymnasium and extensive outdoor facilities was built in 1968 in prefabricated construction and was used as a school site, initially as an extended secondary school and later as the Johannes Kepler Grammar School. The complex was located in the centre of a residential area. In 2008, the city of Chemnitz, as the property owner and school authority, gave up the use of the complex due to the ruinous condition of the building and the excessive refurbishment costs. Since then, the derelict site has stood empty and has increasingly become the subject of vandalism and rubbish dumping.
The project included the demolition of all buildings and underground structures as well as the professional disposal of the resulting material. In addition, the sports ground was removed and the site was subsequently levelled and landscaped.
