The former substation was a plant for electricity conversion and distribution formerly owned by Stadtwerke Chemnitz AG. The plant was built in 1933 on a 2,000 m² plot of land belonging to a farm in the rural landscape of the time. It was used for these purposes until 1973 and as a warehouse for the municipal energy supplier until 1995. Since then, the substation had lain derelict and fallen into disrepair, and was in danger of collapsing.

The revitalisation of the site has sustainably supported the urban development of the city of Chemnitz by eliminating environmental damage and avoiding the use of further land resources. In addition, the demolition of the building structure eliminated general hazards relevant to public order. The area directly adjacent to the Südring was landscaped and some car parking spaces were created. In the long term, a commercial building is to be built there.
