Revitalisation of the property on Heinrich-Schütz-Straße, former barracks buildings
European Regional Development Fund (ERDF)
A barracks for the 15th Royal Infantry Regiment was built on the site on Heinrich-Schütz-Straße between 1899 and 1902. Structural extensions followed until 1914.
After the First World War, the buildings were used for a variety of civilian purposes as a result of the Treaty of Versailles. From 1935, the complex was once again used for military purposes, first by the German Wehrmacht and then by the Soviet occupying forces. After the withdrawal of the Russian forces, the buildings were no longer used. The city of Chemnitz acquired the site and, with the help of various funding programmes, was able to completely clear the barracks site, with the exception of four multi-storey buildings, and rid it of contaminated sites.
The subsidised revitalisation measures include the demolition of the four ruinous barracks buildings down to the lower edge of the foundations as well as the removal of underground structures, sewers, drainage systems, pipes and sealed surfaces. The area will then be landscaped. Other subsequent uses are possible in the future; the new school for disabled children and a residential home are currently being built on the rear areas.
