URBACT: ALT/BAU - Alternative Buildung Activation Units
City of Chemnitz as lead partner in the transfer network

The aim of such transfer networks, such as here at ALT/BAU - Alternative Building Activation Units, is to transfer good practice examples of sustainable urban development.
The good practice example was the municipal project "Agentur StadtWohnen Chemnitz". The city of Chemnitz, which was successful with the agency in the field of urban development, took on the role of mentor and at the same time the management of the network. The other network partners learnt from the "lead partner" Chemnitz. During the project, they analysed the good practice example, adapted it to their local conditions and finally transferred it to their city.
Background: URBACT

URBACT is a European programme. It is financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the 28 EU member states, Norway and Switzerland. The main aim of the programme is to promote integrated, sustainable urban development. URBACT supports the participating cities and institutions in developing and implementing urban development concepts. Topics include innovation, CO2 reduction, environmental protection, social integration and employment promotion.
Initial situation
The StadtWohnen Chemnitz agency is an initiative of the city of Chemnitz. It is working to bring the numerous Wilhelminian-style buildings that have been standing empty in Chemnitz city centre for many years back into conversation and renovation.
moreProcess and activities
The six participating cities want to jointly develop strategies to revitalise long vacant and unrenovated buildings.
In the first phase of the project, suitable cities were sought throughout Europe for the network.
moreCentral results
The establishment of the network with a total of six partner cities is the result of the first phase of the URBACT project ALT/BAU. The intensive exchange between the partners will continue until the end of 2020.
