NUMIC: Results

Three years of NUMIC and one year of the NUMICO model route real-world laboratory - the research project of the City of Chemnitz and Chemnitz University of Technology with associated partners has produced some internal findings and many public results: A suitable route for the model route was chosen, surveys and design competitions were carried out and finally measures to improve the route were implemented. The input from over 100 ideas and comments from the people of Chemnitz has enriched the work of the NUMIC project team - both online and in personal discussions.
Project documentation

Manual
Finally, all the results are summarised in a handy format: The Handbook for Participatory Mobility Planning - What Moves Citizens summarises all the findings gathered in the project and, above all, the experience gained. In addition to general insights into the course of the project, the handbook also offers a look behind the scenes. You can find out more about the background to decisions and gain insights into the research results: What worked well at NUMIC and what might we have done differently in hindsight? The book also offers recommendations for your own mobility projects. Because only together and with needs-based planning can a new mobility awareness be successfully implemented.
Measures to implement active and sustainable mobility
In order to drive forward the mobility transition from car-based transport to sustainable alternatives such as cycling and walking, the NUMIC project team intensively analysed the interests, needs and opinions of the population. By actively involving citizens with the help of surveys, ideas and design competitions, a total of 23 different measures were implemented in the project along the selected NUMICO model route.
The numerous individual actions from NUMIC are visualised on the basis of 23 clear profiles and are now available as a publication for interested citizens, other municipalities, associations, NGOs and other mobility stakeholders as inspiration.
Synthesis workshop
The synthesis workshop "Urban mobility between science and practice" on 17 May 2022 also contributed to the handbook, where the results of the project were presented and discussed with interested Chemnitz citizens in a dialogue-oriented expert exchange. The event kicked off with a panel discussion featuring Alexander Kirste (City of Chemnitz) and Bjarne Lotze (City of Chemnitz, NUMIC), Prof Dr Angelika C. Bullinger-Hoffmann (Chemnitz University of Technology), Frank Kutzner (Wegebund), Janna Aljets (Agora Verkehrswende) and Katja Manz as moderator. The panellists addressed the question of how urban mobility can succeed in practice and how hurdles can be overcome in everyday political life in order to make research findings on sustainable mobility usable in practice. In a keynote speech, Dr Bernd Bienzeisler, Head of the Research and Innovation Centre for Cognitive Service Systems KODIS at the Fraunhofer IAO, spoke about the paths of urban mobility cultures. The following topics were then explored in greater depth in three workshops:- What data really helps with the implementation of sustainable mobility concepts?
- Participation 4.0 - how can people be involved in relevant urban planning, architecture and mobility decisions in the future?
- Municipal room for manoeuvre - how can municipalities (better) meet the demands of many stakeholders and open up room for manoeuvre for local measures?
The synthesis workshop provided the project team with another important exchange and new insights.

Innovation Award

NUMIC's work was recognised with a nomination for the Innovation Award for Real-World Laboratories 2022. In the competition organised by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK), NUMIC was selected by an expert jury as one of the top 10 in the "Insights: Real-world laboratories in implementation" category from over 100 submissions. Nevertheless, the project team is proud of what has been achieved within the NUMIC project with the participation of the people of Chemnitz and NUMIC can now officially bear the Nominated!2022 seal.
All other nominees and the winners can be found on the BMWK website:
