Broadband expansion 2.0

As part of the first subsidised broadband expansion, the city of Chemnitz has connected the underserved areas in the North and South clusters with future-proof NGA bandwidths by the end of 2022. In order to close any remaining gaps in coverage from the completed projects, the City Council of Chemnitz has instructed the administration to submit the necessary funding applications in resolution B-104/2020. Three territorial lots were formed, which are spread across the entire city of Chemnitz. A further lot includes the development of additional schools in the city area.

With the aim of submitting an application for federal funding for broadband expansion in accordance with the guidelines, the city of Chemnitz published a market survey in 2019. The market exploration procedure determined whether a private-sector expansion of an NGA network is likely to take place within the next three years or whether an existing network is already in place.

The target bandwidth according to the guideline at the beginning of the market exploration procedure was to supply all subscribers with at least 30 Mbit/s. This means that only subscribers who receive and/or have less than 30 Mbit/s coverage can apply for funding from the City of Chemnitz to build a broadband infrastructure.

The aim is to ensure comprehensive and nationwide coverage with NGA bandwidths in all tendered parts of the city of Chemnitz without a guaranteed market-driven supply perspective. All eligible address points are to be reliably supplied with bandwidths of at least one Gbit/s.

The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure as part of the funding programme "Funding to support broadband expansion in the Federal Republic of Germany" (federal funding programme) of 22.10.2015, as amended on 18.08.2020, and of the Free State of Saxony as part of the "Funding for the expansion of high-speed broadband networks and for equipping public areas relevant to tourism with publicly accessible hotspots/WLAN - Directive Digital Offensive Saxony (RL DiOS) of 18/09/2018, Part C - Co-funding of the programme.2018, Part C - Co-financing of funding measures in accordance with the guideline "Funding to support broadband expansion in the Federal Republic of Germany" of the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI-RL) as well as a municipal contribution.
