Background: URBACT

URBACT is a European programme. It is financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the 28 EU member states, Norway and Switzerland. The main aim of the programme is to promote integrated, sustainable urban development. URBACT supports the participating cities and institutions in developing and implementing urban development concepts. Topics include innovation, CO2 reduction, environmental protection, social integration and employment promotion.
Initial situation
The Altchemnitz commercial location is anchored in the Chemnitz 2020 urban development concept (SEKo). With regard to the provision of new commercial space, the traditional pilot location of Altchemnitz was analysed in a spatial study in 2014.

The formation of a local action plan is intended to build partnerships and prepare a participatory revitalisation process. The factory complex has been included in the Route of Industrial Heritage.
