District park at Pleißenbach
Information walk for citizens
The Altendorf goods station, which opened in 1903, was once a hive of activity. It was regarded as a hub for the surrounding factories in the north of Chemnitz. Since the railway abandoned the site, nature has gradually reclaimed the area. Now the site is to be developed into a neighbourhood park.

On 6 October 2022, interested citizens and local residents were invited to a walk during which the responsible planning office Station C23 and representatives of the City of Chemnitz presented the ideas. These are now to be realised step by step as a so-called intervention area of the European Capital of Culture by 2025.
There is great public interest in the development of the site. Since 2014, exploratory walks, citizens' forums, dialogue events and two citizens' workshops have been held. Suggestions and ideas have been analysed and incorporated into the plans. The project offers the opportunity to fulfil a public wish and create a link between parts of Altendorf, Kaßberg and the Flemming area. An attractive green urban space is to be created on the site of the former goods railway station in Altendorf. The centrepiece of the project is the Pleißenbach stream, which is to be redesigned with its banks in a natural way. The resulting neighbourhood park will be open to the public.
Planners present future park

These plans have now been presented on site: More than 150 citizens took part in the walk through the area, which has now been transformed by nature and man. The planners and those responsible from the city of Chemnitz explained the plans and construction projects at several stations. There was also information about the planned premium cycle path and a new playground, where the children themselves will be responsible for the planning: A competition process with children's participation is to take place at the beginning of 2023. - After all, they are the experts when it comes to playgrounds.
Next steps
The realisation of the green corridor will soon begin in the first sections. In the coming vegetation-free period until the end of February 2023, preparatory measures such as tree care and clearing work will be carried out on the watercourse and the outdoor facilities. At the heart of the park, the conversion of the watercourse and construction work is scheduled to begin in summer 2023, as is the construction of the first outdoor facilities. These should be completed by the end of 2024. The prerequisite for this is the pending decision on the approval process. At the same time, the new bridge for pedestrians and cyclists from Limbacher Straße into the park is to be built from summer 2023 and is also scheduled for completion by the end of 2024.
