In order to make the crossing of Augustusburger Straße at the level of Gablenzer Straße safer, the parking situation in front of the pedestrian crossing was regulated. In addition, a pedestrian island was created in the form of an advanced side area, which is marked with traffic guards (see photo). The traffic lights were also fitted with an acoustic signal and traffic light handles. The connecting path to Clausewitzstraße was also refurbished.

The reasons:

Widening pavements, such as advanced sideways spaces, make a significant contribution to road safety and increase comfort when crossing a road. On the one hand, they reduce the length of the section of road to be crossed and, on the other, they improve the visibility of the road and the visual contact of pedestrians with other road users. At this point, however, the pedestrian island primarily creates more space for all those waiting at the traffic lights, which is limited by the slope of Gablenzer Straße and a railing. This also means that cyclists do not have to "approach" the hill. The acoustic signal of the traffic light system also increases safety when crossing the road for people with visual impairments.

The process:

(In)safe crossings were a much-discussed topic in all of NUMIC's participations. Implementation must be coordinated with all specialist departments within the Civil Engineering Department, as various traffic safety issues, traffic volumes and construction details need to be clarified. The actual implementation planning is then the responsibility of the Traffic Control and Regulation Department.
