NUMIC measure: Cycle route signposting

The measure

Four route signposts and 74 intermediate signposts were installed on lamp posts as part of NUMIC, wherever transport links cross the route. The detailed arrow signposts with destination, distance and direction information and the concise intermediate signposts refer to important junctions and destinations along the NUMICO route and ensure that pedestrians and cyclists always find the right route.

The reasons:

Cycling and walking are becoming increasingly attractive. To help cyclists and pedestrians find their way quickly and arrive safely at their destination, the visibility of the routes has been increased by means ofinformation boards and cycle route signs. The signposts are practical, informative and can be used by everyone. They extend beyond the project route and connect the route with the urban cycle network. The well-signposted routes with clear information ensure increased comfort and safety for users and greater acceptance of cycle paths and footpaths.

The process:

Installing signs is not as easy as expected and requires the involvement of many authorities and regulations. For example, all signposting must comply with the national standard (FGSV standard) and the Saxon guidelines for cycle route signposting. The latter stipulates, for example, the number of individual elements or a regular inspection of the signs. In addition, references by name to catering establishments, for example, are prohibited. However, a general reference to places to stop for refreshments via a pictogram is permitted. According to the German Road Traffic Regulations (StVO), cycle and footpath signs may not be placed everywhere. For example, some traffic signs such as stop signs (StVO VZ 206, also StVO VZ205, VZ301, VZ306, VZ350) may not have any signs on them.

Costs:

approx. 50 euros per cycle signpost, 20 euros per intermediate signpost - approx.
approx. 2,500 euros in total

Realisation period:

1 week planning,
2 weeks tendering,
1 week production of the signs,
