A parklet was built on Hans-Ziegler-Straße as one of two locations. This was created in cooperation with Holzkombinat and the Montessori primary school in Chemnitz. With the help of flower pots and a cosy wooden look, it is intended to offer passers-by an attractive place to linger. The entrance is located on the pavement side, and the parklet is screened off from the street side and fitted with beacons.

The reasons:

Car parks can be found on every corner in cities. Parklets are therefore often built on former car parks to create more space in public spaces, not only for cars but also for pedestrians. Thanks to their comfortable design, they offer a small island of peace where you can take a breather after shopping or chat with your neighbours. Due to the pick-up and drop-off traffic at the Montessori primary school, the parklet on Hans-Ziegler-Straße is also particularly suitable as a waiting area for pupils. As they represent an extension of the pavement into the street, streets with lower traffic volumes and a speed limit of 30 km/h are suitable for this purpose.

The process:

A special use permit for the parklet has been issued by the traffic authority of the city of Chemnitz in accordance with Section 18 of the Saxon Road Act (SächsStrG). The individual design was based on a joint workshop organised by Holzkombinat and the Montessori primary school. Following preparations by Holzkombinat, the parklet was constructed together with the children within three days. It also includes a herb bed, which is maintained by the school. In December 2021, parts of the parklet were damaged by vandalism and repaired.

Costs:

approx. 7,500 Euro
