He who rests, rusts? Not on the parklet the size of a parking space, which was erected on Zeisigwaldstraße in collaboration with the Chemnitz community and the local company Holzkombinat. The temporary wooden structure is intended to provide people with more space to spend time, for example by providing seating next to the pavement, thus improving the quality of time spent outdoors.

The parklet was moved to Henriettenstraße in the winter of 2022.

The reasons:

The parklet is a true multi-talent: whether as a meeting place for residents, as a sun-protected place to rest during a walk, as a place to play (chess), to grow regional herbs in a mini raised bed or to park bicycles: It shows that the street space dominated by cars is changeable and can be actively designed and revitalised. The aim is to sensitise people to the use of public spaces and gradually reduce the area used by cars. The parklet is not for private use. Rather, it is intended to be used jointly by all citizens and thus ultimately increase the quality of life on site.

The process:

The parklets were built in collaboration with Chemnitz citizens. The corresponding kick-off event for the design took place on 25 August 2021. This was followed by a timber construction workshop with the company Holzkombinat on 11 September 2021 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., before the parklet was erected on site on 21 and 22 September. Not every location is suitable for setting up a parklet. The chosen location should not be too busy so as not to further complicate the complex parking situation by removing a car park. In addition, certain safety precautions such as beacons or entrances must be observed.

On the street side, a beacon alerts drivers to the obstacle, as agreed with the City of Chemnitz's Traffic Control & Regulation Department. The parklet will remain at the Zeisigwaldstraße site until the end of the project in November 2022. Subsequently, it is intended to draw attention to the use of public spaces in other parts of the city and is therefore now located on Henriettenstraße in Kaßberg.
